CAIR-MN Asks GOP to Repudiate County Chair’s Anti-Muslim Remarks

CAIR-MN Asks GOP to Repudiate County Chair’s Anti-Muslim Remarks

Big Stone County GOP Chair Jack Whitley calls Muslims ‘parasites,’ wants to ‘frag em’ in Mecca

(MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 11/20/14) -- The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) today called on state and national Republican Party leaders to repudiate comments by Big Stone County GOP Chair Jack Whitley, who called Muslims “parasites” and wrote “frag em” in Mecca. “Frag” refers to a fragmentation grenade, a type of hand grenade.

In a Facebook status posted on his page on November 19, Whitley wrote:

“I am opposed to waterboarding muslim terrorists, but probably not why you think. I am opposed to waterboarding muslim terrorists because it is a waste of resources. They are muslims, they are terrorist, we know where they are from, we know where their buddies are, we know where their mosque's are, we know millions of these parasites travel to Mecca every year and when...FRAG 'EM! Simplicity. I love when it all comes together!” [Note: Grammatical errors in the original text have be maintained.]

The Bluestem Prairie blog noted that “the status isn't an isolated expression of anti-Muslim sentiment on Whitley's Facebook page.”

“It’s very disturbing to see a Republican Party leader engage in outright bigotry and hate. These broad-brush smears of the entire Muslim community remind us of similar smears against Catholics, Jews and others in the past,” said CAIR-MN Executive Director Lori Saroya. “GOP leaders in Minnesota and nationwide must repudiate these extremist and bigoted views. Without a clear rejection of these inaccurate and intolerant remarks, the party’s silence will appear to be agreement.”

CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

CAIR-MN Asks FBI to Probe Anti-Islam Hate Vandalism in St. Paul

CAIR-MN Asks FBI to Probe Anti-Islam Hate Vandalism in St. Paul

(MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 11/13/14) -- The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) today called on the FBI to investigate vandalism apparently targeting Muslims in a St. Paul neighborhood as a hate crime.

Neighbors contacted CAIR-MN to report that someone wrote “F*** Islam” using motor oil near the driveway of a home. They said several Muslim families live in the St. Paul neighborhood.

“Federal law enforcement authorities should assist in bringing the perpetrators of this apparent hate crime to justice,” said CAIR-MN Executive Director Lori Saroya. “Minnesota’s political and religious leaders have a responsibility to speak out strongly against the growing anti-Muslim sentiment in our society that can lead to this type of disturbing incident.”
