(MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 6/28/2019) – The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic relations (CAIR-MN) today called on law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for an intrusion into a St. Cloud, Minn., mosque by a man with a dog.
CAIR-MN said the white male entered the Central Minnesota Islamic Center yesterday evening with a large dog. The man wandered in the mosque and was seen by worshipers as he left. When leaving the mosque, the man pulled hair from the dog and threw it on the floor. [NOTE: Anti-Muslim bigots often believe that taking a dog into a mosque is a way to desecrate the house of worship because of the false notion that Muslims hate dogs.]
The intrusion was captured on video surveillance. Local police are investigating the incident.

“Because of the recent heightened tensions in the area and the common Islamophobic belief about dogs desecrating Islamic houses of worship, we urge law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for this incident,” said CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein.
Hussein said the Muslim community in St. Cloud is on edge following a recent New York Times Article about Islamophobia in the city.

He noted that CAIR-MN recently welcomed hate crime charges brought against a Faribault, Minn., man who allegedly used a pressure-washing hose against a 15-year-old Somali-American Muslim girl and her siblings while yelling racial slurs.

Hussein added that CAIR has witnessed an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims, immigrants and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.
Community members are urged to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR's Civil Rights Department at 202-742-6420 or by filing a report at: http://www.cair.com/report
CAIR launched an app to share critical “know your rights” information and to simplify the process to report hate crimes and bias incidents. CAIR is urging American Muslims and members of other minority groups to download the app and utilize this resource to stay informed and empowered.

CAIR recently released a groundbreaking report, called “Hijacked by Hate: American Philanthropy and the Islamophobia Network,” listing the philanthropic foundations, many of them mainstream, that were used by anonymous special interest donors to funnel almost $125 million to anti-Muslim hate groups.
The report’s authors noted that one outcome of the funding and promotion of anti-Muslim hate and conspiracy theories has been the measurable nationwide increase in anti-Muslim hate violence, bullying of children and discrimination. The period covered by the report showed a marked increase in anti-Muslim hate violence and discrimination.
