What's on the Election Day ballot in 2020?

All voters will have these races on their general election ballot:

  • U.S. President
  • U.S. Senator
  • U.S. Representative
  • State Senator
  • State Representative
  • Judicial seats

Voters may also have one or more of these races on their ballot:

  • County Officials
  • City Officers
  • School Board Members
  • Township Officers
  • Local ballot questions

EARLY VOTING - COVID 

HOW TO GET A MAIL-IN BALLOT FOR THE AUG 11 PRIMARY

  • Who can vote by mail: Everyone.
  • How to apply to vote by mail: Apply online (starting May 13) or by submitting your completed PDF ballot by mail, fax, or email to your county election office.
  • Application request deadline: Application must be received by August 10.
  • Ballot return deadline: Mailed ballot must be received by 8pm on Election Day (August 11). By court order, ballots received within two days of Election Day and postmarked by August 11, 2020 (Election Day) will be counted

VOTE EARLY (ABSENTEE)

In Minnesota, you can vote early with an absentee ballot starting 46 days before Election Day. You can request an absentee ballot online. Read about other options and more information about absentee voting at the links below.

VOTE EARLY IN PERSON

You can vote early with an absentee ballot at your local elections office. If you are not registered, you can do so in person if you show proof of residence.

LOCATIONS

All voters have at least one location where they can vote early in person with an absentee ballot. Depending on where you live, there may be additional locations.

  1. You can vote in person at your county election office.
  2. In addition to your county election office, some cities and towns offer in-person absentee voting. Check with your city clerk's office for more information.

HOURS

For most elections, absentee voting locations must be open during their normal business hours starting 46 days before the election. In addition, locations offering absentee ballots for federal, state or county elections must be open:

  • The last Saturday before Election Day (10 a.m. — 3 p.m.)
  • The day before Election Day until 5 p.m.
  • This does not apply to school districts holding standalone elections. 

Some local jurisdictions may provide additional absentee voting days or hours beyond the above required days and times. Call your jurisdiction for more information.

2020 EARLY VOTING DATES

PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION PRIMARY

First day to vote early in person: Friday, January 17

Last day to vote early in person: Monday, March 2

PRIMARY ELECTION

First day to vote early in person: Friday, June 26

Last day to vote early in person: Monday, August 10

GENERAL ELECTION

First day to vote early in person: Friday, September 18

Last day to vote early in person: Monday, November 2

 

 

 

Free and fair elections

Read rules for polling place behavior, learn about your rights and find out how to file a complaint. 

 

  • Be at least 18 years old on Election Day
  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Have resided in Minnesota for 20 days immediately preceding Election Day
  • Have any felony conviction record discharged, expired or completed
  • Not be under court-ordered guardianship where a court has revoked your voting rights
  • Not have been ruled legally incompetent by a court of law
